The 8 minute per half, 7-a side tournament held at Dr Remigio Pinto Ground, Taleigao On October 14 allowed 10 players from each team to participate in the tournament. The tournament saw participation from top soccer academies from Mumbai and Goa, with a total of nine teams participating that included US Football Academy (A), US Football Academy (B), City School, Dempo Sports Club, Dias United Club, Beto’s Brazilian Football Academy, St Pios High School, Cathedral & John High School And Hansrat High School. Salgaocar’s romped home to lift the title without conceding a single goal in the tournament including in the playoff stages in its games versus US Football Academy (B), Cathedral & John High School. Salgaocar colts later beat Dempo Under-14 with a 2-0 in the semis. The goals were scored by Russel Vaz and Myron Mendes. Russel and Myron repeated their heroics to win the final scoring one goal each in the finals winning 2-0 by beating Goa based Goa United Fooball Academy. Russel was Man of the Match for either games and received an award from Arjuna awardee Brahamanand Sankhwalkar The boys played three games in the play-off stage in the morning and two in the evening. Salgaocar forward Myron has been constantly performing and recently represented Indian at Tehran for the Under-14 AFC festival. Peter Fernandes (D-license coach), coach of the Salgaocar Under-14 team lauded the efforts of Elton Gomes; the goalkeeper who finished the tournament with a clean sheet. Anthony Noronha, Manager of the youth development programme was elated the way the boys played and lauded the efforts of the organizers of the tournament that gives young talent to show case their skills. R.A.J Gomes; General Secretary of Salgaocar Sports club, congratulated the boys on his triumph and said, “this shows how committed we are at Salgaocar’s with developing youth.” “Our programmes and Under-12 upto Under-19 teams will receive a huge boost with such victories,” he stated. Gomes added, “We will not just continue to strengthen and build the senior team but want to give special attention to juniors; so that they will shine for the country as they progress,” Francisco Bruto De Costa, Technical Director of the Salgaocars Youth Development programme stated; winning is a plus point but developing the boys and overseeing that their skills grow is our priority. He stated, “We are happy the boys are learning and they have made us proud. By executing what they are thought; their efforts have made these victorious. He also emphasized that it’s the perfect start to the season.” Francisco believes it’s the boys putting their best rather then hoping for laurels when youth perform.
