1967-80….The First Outstation Truimph

The first decade was hugely successful for Salgaocar Sports Club. Their style of play had caught the eye of many a spectator helping the club develop a large fan following even beyond Goan shores who made their presence felt on match days.

The team continued their winning ways by clinching the Goa First Division League twice during this era, first in the 1974-75 season, and then in the 1977-78 season.

In 1968, the team proceeded on their first International assignment when they were invited to take part in the Centenary celebrations of the Colombo Railway. After traveling by train to Rameshwaram, they caught a boat to Talaimanar (Sri Lanka), before proceeding again by rail to Colombo. A narrow defeat to a Sri Lankan club side however saw the team crash out in the first round of the four team event.

However, the major achievement for the club during this period was their first major outstation triumph beating Punjab Police by a solitary goal to lift the Nagpur Rovers Cup in 1971. With morale boosted after the first outstation triumph, the team almost added another, but was outdone by Mohun Bagan in tie-breakers in the replayed semi-finals of the Mumbai Rovers Cup later in the same year.

More bad luck was to come Salgaocar Sports Club way. After doing well to reach the finals of the Sri Narayana Memorial tournament in 1971-72, the team lost to ASC in the finals.

In 1975, Salgaocar took part in the Nizam Gold Cup for the first time. After a fine 2-1 victory against defending champions RAC comprising the likes of India striker Magan Singh, Chain Singh and Prahlad Singh in the semi-finals thanks mainly to the apt defending by Vishwas, Coutinho and Inacio Piedade and fine keeping by Brahmanand and goals by Francis Rodrigues and Zai D’Costa, Salgaocar lost in the replayed finals to Tata 1-0, the goal incidentally scored by Shabir Ali who went on to coach Salgaocar Sports Club later on in his career.

In 1977-78, a 2-0 defeat to Premier Tyres in the finals of the Mammen Mapillai tournament in Quilon compounded the clubs misery of failing to add their first outstation triumph.

However, things were soon set to change. After emerging triumphs in the Goa Super League, the boost in the morale of the team was evident. Riding on a wave of confidence, the team went on to win the 1978 Puttiah Memorial tournament in Bangalore with a 1-0 scoreline. Victory couldn’t be sweeter as it came against none other then fierce city rivals Vasco Sports Club.

The second outstation triumph was soon to be followed by the third. The following year, they lifted the T.F.A. shield in Madurai beating ITI 1-0. In Goa however, the team succumbed  to Sesa Goa 1-0 in the finals of the All India Bandodkar Gold Cup.
